Creative Writing Workshop with Jen Calonita
Thursdays, December 13, January 17 and February 28
4:15-5:15 p.m. Registration starts November 29.
Jen Calonita, author of the popular YA series the Belles and the Secrets of My Hollywood Life, is back to conduct her popular teen workshop. Bring your journal and Jen will provide you with professional feedback and information on how to become a writer.

SAT Preparation Workshop
Saturdays, January 12, 19, 26 and February 2, 9, and 16
Time:11:00-1:00
$80 per student/checks only.
This course will focus mostly on the structure of the test and the strategies and methods needed to succeed on the test. Students must purchase the Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition (ISBN-10: 0874478529) for the course.
The course will cover all three subjects on the SAT - Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. Please make checks payable to Merrick Library.  No refunds.
Registration for Merrick library patrons begins on December 15. Non residents may sign up for the program on December 29.

Babysitters Workshop
Monday, February 11 at 4:00p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Attend our popular workshop with Registered Nurses, Joann Tanck and Georgette Basso, and become a professional babysitter. Certificates will be awarded to all participants. Please bring a doll to the class.
Registration starts January 14. This workshop offered only twice per year. Sign up early.

Volunteer programs for 7-12 graders:
Participate in one of our volunteer programs and receive community service hours.
Programs are open only for Merrick residents. Registration for all volunteer programs starts on December 19.

Yoga Buddies
Wednesdays, January 16, 23, 30 and February 6 and 13.
Time: 3:45-5:00p.m.
Become a yoga buddy for a fifth or sixth grader. Together with the with yoga instructor Maria Yakkey, you will exercise and work on creating a yoga journal.
Please bring your yoga mat to the class. Registration begins on December 19. Limited to 5 volunteers.


Make a Blanket to Donate
Wednesday, January 16
6:00-8:00p.m.
Create a warm holiday gift to be donated to a local shelter. No knitting or sewing experiences necessary.
Registration starts on December 19.

Volunteers for Chocolate Covered Pretzels Program.
Tuesday, February 12 from 3:30-5:30p.m.
Help us to run this sweet cooking program for children. Sign up starts on December 19.

Scavenger Hunt for Children
Wednesday, February 20 from 3:30p.m.-5:30p.m.
Help us organize and run a fun program for children. Teens have to attend a training sessions on Wednesday, February 13 @3:00p.m.Registration starts December 19. Limited to 5 volunteers.

Summer Reading Club June 18-August 23
Take Action-READ!
When you sign up for the Summer Reading Club and submit a book review you’ll receive a bracelet or other prize purchased from a non-profit organization. This summer each book you read is your contribution for change. In addition to prizes for each submitted book review you will be able to enter our Weekly Raffles. At the end of the summer, all participants of the Summer Reading Club will be eligible to enter the Grand Prize Summer Raffle.

iPod Donation Drive
Do you have an iPod you’re not using anymore? We need them!
During this summer we are collecting old iPods for Music & Memory . This non-profit organization  brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or the infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving their quality of life. iPods can be dropped off at the Teen/Media Desk starting June 1-August 23.

Summer Volunteer Programs

Summer Reading Club Volunteers 8-12 Graders
Volunteers will help to review summer reading reports and give away prizes in the Children’s Room. Volunteers must be available for at least two hours a week from11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., 2:00-4:00 p.m. or 6:00-8:00 p.m. from June 25-August 15. Applicants must be available for the training session on June 19 at 6:30-7:00p.m. Sign up limited to 20 volunteers only.

Book Buddies
We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers in grades 7-12 who will read to tots in our Children’s room. A Training Session will take place on Thursday, June 28 at 6:30p.m.
Volunteers must be available on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. starting July 9 and ending August 6.
Sign up limited to 10 volunteers only.

NEW! Crafts with Kids
During this program teens will help kids to complete simple art projects.
Volunteers must be available on Wednesdays, July 11-August 8 from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Training session: July 9 at 2:00 p.m. Sign up limited to 5 volunteers only.

Scavenger Hunt
Thursday, July 12 @5:30 p.m.
Volunteers will meet on Monday, July 9 at 3:00 p.m to help plan and prepare the Scavenger Hunt for kids in the Children’s Room. 

Beach Bag Book Club
 Beach Bag Book Club opens its doors on June 20.
  
Our monthly meetings will take place at the Merrick Library.
Time: 4:15-5:30 p.m. Registration begins on May 23.
Grab a beach bag, available at the Teen/Media desk; relax by the pool or at the beach with a book and come for a cozy gathering at the Merrick Library to discuss summer reeds with popular authors. We guarantee lots of fun; give away prizes, snack, raffles, and book sale.

Our popular Game Tournament is back!  We'll set up three gaming consoles, and provide snacks and prizes.  Participants will be able to vote for games during the sign up.

CPR Classes for Teens
Saturday, May 19th from 11 am to 3 pm.  Fee $5.00.                                  Registration begins 4/21.
This class is presented by IIdiko Catuogno, a certified Red Cross CPR/AED First Aid Instructor.  Learn how to reduce the risk of injury to infants and children, respond to emergency situations, and care for an infant or child who has stopped breathing.

Wednesday, February 22nd from 11 am to 3 pm Receive a sponsor sheet at sign up and raise money for a local food bank and shelter.  On the day of the program we will supply you with books, bagels, snacks and beverages.  Registration begins January 25.

Friday, February 24th, from 3 - 4 pm
Come and share your view of library programs in front of the camera! The video will be edited and posted on the Merrick Library facebook page.  Registration begins on January 27th.

Beach Bag Book Club: Fall Session

Beach Bag Book Club takes over fall with this Halloween Treat!  Join us at the North Merrick Public Library to met author Gitty Daneshvari and talk about her book,
