Community Hours Programs for teens.

Attention 7-12 graders, participate in one of the programs
and receive community service hours.
Programs are open only for Merrick residents.
Registration for all volunteers programs starts on February 19.



Book Buddies
We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers in grades 7-12 who will read to tots in our Children’s room. A Training Session will take place on Wednesday, March 6 at 4:00p.m. Volunteers must be available on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. starting March 11-April 22 (no programs on 3/26 and 4/1). Sign up limited to 10 volunteers only.



LEGO Contest
Sunday, April 14 at 2:00-3:30p.m.
Help us to run and judge a LEGO Contest at the Children’s Room. Volunteers have to be available on Sunday, April 14  from 1:30-4:00p.m.
Sign up limited to 5 volunteers only.


Spring Planting
Wednesday, May 15 @3:30p.m.
Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. We will plant some flowers at the library garden. Gardening tools, gloves and snack will be provided. Sign up limited for 5 volunteers.


Mother-daughter Book Discussion
Teens are invited to participate in this program as volunteers. You’ll help us to organize and run a book discussion for tweens and their moms. The discussions are led by YA author, Jen Calonita.  Dates of the program: Thursdays March 14, April 11 and May 16.
Time: 3:30-5:00p.m. Sign up limited for 6 volunteers.


CPR Class for Teens
Saturday, April 27
11:30a.m.-3:30p.m.
Fee $5:00
This class is presented by Ildiko Catuogno, a certified Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid instructor.
Right before the summer learn how to reduce the risk of injury to infants and children, respond to emergency situations, care for an infant or child who stop breathing.

Make IT Club
Thursdays, March 28, April 25 and May 23. Time: 6:00-7:00p.m.
Join this club and learn how to use 3-D printer. Together as a team we will create a costume made chess set by using Makerbot.  Sign up limited to 6 students. You have to sign up for all three sessions. Registration starts on February 28.


Finals Week at the Merrick library              
April 29-May 11
Attention Students:
During the week of finals our  meeting room will be transformed to a study hall where students can prepare for exams with their friends or on their own. Grab your laptop and notes and come and study at the Merrick Library. We also have a Group Study Room and a Conference Room that can be booked by a group of Merrick patrons for study purposes. Winter 2012-2013 programs for Teens:


Creative Writing Workshop with Jen Calonita
Thursdays, December 13, January 17 and February 28
4:15-5:15 p.m. Registration starts November 29.
Jen Calonita, author of the popular YA series the Belles and the Secrets of My Hollywood Life, is back to conduct her popular teen workshop. Bring your journal and Jen will provide you with professional feedback and information on how to become a writer.

SAT Preparation Workshop
Saturdays, January 12, 19, 26 and February 2, 9, and 16
Time:11:00-1:00
$80 per student/checks only.
This course will focus mostly on the structure of the test and the strategies and methods needed to succeed on the test. Students must purchase the Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition (ISBN-10: 0874478529) for the course.
The course will cover all three subjects on the SAT - Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. Please make checks payable to Merrick Library.  No refunds.
Registration for Merrick library patrons begins on December 15. Non residents may sign up for the program on December 29.


Babysitters Workshop
Monday, February 11 at 4:00p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Attend our popular workshop with Registered Nurses, Joann Tanck and Georgette Basso, and become a professional babysitter. Certificates will be awarded to all participants. Please bring a doll to the class.
Registration starts January 14. This workshop offered only twice per year. Sign up early.

Yoga Buddies
Wednesdays, January 16, 23, 30 and February 6 and 13.
Time: 3:45-5:00p.m.
Become a yoga buddy for a fifth or sixth grader. Together with the with yoga instructor Maria Yakkey, you will exercise and work on creating a yoga journal.
Please bring your yoga mat to the class. Registration begins on December 19. Limited to 5 volunteers.


Make a Blanket to Donate
Wednesday, January 16
6:00-8:00p.m.
Create a warm holiday gift to be donated to a local shelter. No knitting or sewing experiences necessary.
Registration starts on December 19.

Volunteers for Chocolate Covered Pretzels Program.
Tuesday, February 12 from 3:30-5:30p.m.
Help us to run this sweet cooking program for children. Sign up starts on December 19.
Limited to 5 volunteers.


Scavenger Hunt for Children
Wednesday, February 20 from 3:30p.m.-5:30p.m.
Help us organize and run a fun program for children. Teens have to attend a training sessions on Wednesday, February 13 @3:00p.m.Registration starts December 19. Limited to 5 volunteers.

YA Fall 2012
SAT
Saturdays: September 15, 22 and 29, October 6, 20, 27. No class on October 13.
Time 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m. Fee $80.00/checks only
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. Students must purchase The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition, by The College Board. Please make checks payable to Merrick Library.  No refunds.

Non residents may sign up for the program on September 1.

In this workshop-style class, students will receive help with creating their college application essays as well as help with editing and enhancing them. Students are asked to bring in essay questions from the college they wish to attend in addition to any drafts or outlines they may be working on.

End of the Summer Party

Many of you volunteered your time by helping librarians during the Summer Reading programs, or reading for a good cause.
We would like to thank all of you and celebrate your achievements.
Join us for a fun party with pizza, video games and cool activities like the Hunger Game Challenge, decorating cupcakes and making bracelets.
Our special guests will be girls from the One Is Greater Than None Organization.
Volunteers will receive their community hours letters.
We’ll raffle off a Nook and some other cool prizes!

Catching Fire’s November 2013 release date seems like an eternity to wait.
Do not worry: the Hunger Games movie
will be released on DVD on August 18.
