YA Fall 2012
SAT
Saturdays: September 15, 22 and 29, October 6, 20, 27. No class on October 13.
Time 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m. Fee $80.00/checks only
Learn tricks and techniques for taking the SATs. Enhance your math and verbal skills while learning test taking strategies that can help you get a higher score. Students must purchase The Official SAT Study Guide, 2nd edition, by The College Board. Please make checks payable to Merrick Library.  No refunds.
Registration for Merrick library patrons begins on August 18
Non residents may sign up for the program on September 1.

Creative Writing Workshop with the Author Jen Calonita
September 27, October 25 and November 29.
Time: 4:15-5:15 p.m.
Jen Calonia will provide you with instructions, professional feedback and information on how to become a writer and even publish your work. Participants have to register for all three sessions.
Registration begins on August 22.
Non residents sign up starts on September 5. Space limited to 10 students.

College Essay
Mondays, October 1 and 15
Time 6:30-8:00p.m.
In this workshop-style class, students will receive help with creating their college application essays as well as help with editing and enhancing them. Students are asked to bring in essay questions from the college they wish to attend in addition to any drafts or outlines they may be working on.
Registration starts on August 18


Community Hours Programs for teens.

Attention 7-12 graders, participate in one of the programs
and receive community service hours.
Programs are open only for Merrick residents.
Registration for all volunteers programs starts on September 17.


Wii Buddies
Monday, October 8
Program time: 2:00-4:30
Teen volunteers needed to help kids in grades 1-5 play Wii games and other board games. Sign up limited for 5 volunteers.


TAG (Teen Advisory Group)
Want better teen programs and events at the library? Want to have a say in how things are run? THEN JOIN TAG ! YOU WILL GET COMMUNITY SERVICE CREDIT!

Book Buddies
We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers in grades 7-12 who will read to tots in our Children’s room. A Training Session will take place on Thursday, October 11 at 6:30p.m. Volunteers must be available on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. starting October 15-November 5. Sign up limited to 10 volunteers only.


Bingo Game for Kids
Teen volunteers organize and run a Bingo program for kids.
Training session is on Tuesday, October 30@4:15p.m.
Day of the program: Tuesday, November 6 @3:00-5:00p.m.
Sign up limited for 5 volunteers.



LEGO Contest
Sunday, November 18 @
Help us to run and judge a LEGO Contest at the Children’s Room. Volunteers have to be available on Sunday, November 18 from 1:30-3:30p.m.

End of the Summer Party

Many of you volunteered your time by helping librarians during the Summer Reading programs, or reading for a good cause.
We would like to thank all of you and celebrate your achievements.
Join us for a fun party with pizza, video games and cool activities like the Hunger Game Challenge, decorating cupcakes and making bracelets.
Our special guests will be girls from the One Is Greater Than None Organization.
Volunteers will receive their community hours letters.
We’ll raffle off a Nook and some other cool prizes!

Hi Hunger Game fans, are you missing Katniss and Peeta already?

Catching Fire’s November 2013 release date seems like an eternity to wait.
Do not worry: the Hunger Games movie
will be released on DVD on August 18.

We would like to celebrate this event and even give away
one DVD and some other prizes to you!

 Come to the Merrick Library: Teen/Media Desk a.k.a. the Capitol
and receive the Tribute Challenge,
complete instructions step by step and
submit your answer sheet to one of the librarians a.k.a. the Game Makers.

All answers will be reviewed by August 17 and the Victors names will be announced and posted in the Teen/Room on August 18 at 9:00a.m.

Take Action-READ!

When you sign up for the Summer Reading Club and submit a book review you’ll receive a bracelet or other prize purchased from a non-profit organization.
This summer each book you read is your contribution for change.
In addition to prizes for each submitted book review you will be able to enter our Weekly Raffles.
At the end of the summer, all participants of the Summer Reading Club will be eligible to enter
 the Grand Prize Summer Raffle.


Summer Reading Club:
Who: Open for Merrick Library Patrons in grades 6-12
What: The idea is that you read books (that you choose) and get prizes purchased from a non-profit organizations.

2nd review mini notebook from Make a Wish Foundation

3rd review a bracelet from One is Greater than None organization

If you are planning to spend a few weeks at Sleep Away camp do not forget to take a backpack with fun summer reads that we prepared for you. Volunteers will help to review summer reading reports and give away prizes in the Children’s Room. Volunteers must be availablefor at least two hours a week from11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., 2:00-4:00 p.m. or 6:00-8:00 p.m. from June 25-August 15. Applicants must be available for the training session on June 19 at 6:30-7:00p.m. Sign up limited to 20 volunteers only.

iPod Donation Drive
Do you have an iPod you’re not using anymore? We need them!
During this summer we are collecting old iPods for Music & Memory . This non-profit organization  brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or the infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving their quality of life. iPods can be dropped off at the Teen/Media Desk starting June 1-August 23.
